JUNE 15, 1987

The school year has ended and I am free, at least for a few months. One more year and a set of exams and then this chapter of my life is over. Apá says I need to get a job for the summer, that I can’t just sloth around the house. Amá says I am young still and I have many years to find a job. But I like the idea of finding something to pass the time. I think I might try to get something at Mercado Ocho. Luis has a cousin who works there stacking shelves and it seems all right. I can walk there until I’m able to save up for my own car. Either way, I want to get out and do stuff this summer, and I need money to do that. I need money to get out of this boring little neighborhood and see the city. Somewhere in all those streets there has to be someone else like me, someone who wants what I want. He might even be writing down the same thoughts, wishing for the same things. Wherever he is, surely he is dreaming of somewhere else.
